How to design your new apartment

I relocated to Berlin in order to work full time on site with Staramba SE. This is a permanent contract position as Concept Artist and I designed my apartment in 3D. For this I used SketchUp, Keyshot and Photoshop

People usually try to figure out how they design their new apartment and where they place their stuff by planning it on a sheet of paper based on a ground plan....except for 3D Artists and Concept Designers. :D

Since we did not have such a plan me and my dad measured it all out by hand. I made some additional notes about where light switches are and of course measured out the dimensions of all the furniture.

The end result was a standard top down kind of view and some notes of the biggest objects I have.

Next step was recreating everything in SketchUp. I created rough versions of all the stuff I need like furniture, sound system, dish washing mashine and so on. One of the great things about SketchUp is that you can look up your furniture in the 3D Warehouse and try to find models that already exists. A basic 3D plan of my apartment looks like this:

I added markings for doors and tape measurements everywhere. 3D modeling in SketchUp can feel a bit weird in the beginning but it's actually quite alright when you get the idea. So I pushed the objects around in and tried to figure out where to place my entertainment area, stand sitting desk, bed and so on.

Remember function follows form. I wanted light for my desk and I  wanted the TV in front of the sofa and the surround sound system surrounding it and so on. So one of the ideas looked like this:

The bed is too big and does not fit into that corner where I placed the TV corner because I am 2 meters tall and my bed is 2,20m long.

I walked around in 3D, added some textures and created a quick scene in Keyshot.

I learned how to use Keyshot just recently but I am amazed how quickly you can produce ok results. Usually it is used for Characters and if you need a free renderer for SketchUp try Kerkythia. I liked using that for klay renders and overpainting.

I did not really like the sofa next to the bed though. Mostly because there is not much space between sofa and wall. So I made some changes to my tv corner and decided to go with this:

This is a quick overpaint for stuff I wanted to maybe hang on my walls:

The final apartment is still under "construction". Also I'm kinda messy so I am not gonna show too much of it. :D I had enough room to get a dinner table.
